Serving Calgary since 1978 -- Roasting with Passion since 1999
"While roasting coffee is what we do at Kienna, it is not who we are, it is not what defines us. At Kienna, we have passion - passion for our customers, passion for our coffee and passion for creating an
exceptional coffee experience" - Leona Leach, President “I have always been interested in the art of coffee roasting. The fact that I can craft something that I am so personally passionate about, for everyone to enjoy, is just fantastic.”
Randy Leach - Roastmaster |
In 1978 Founder Dan Leach began serving fresh locally roasted coffee to the working communities of Western Canada under the brand Coffee Brew. With the help of his daughter Leona and son Randy, Dan began serving coffee in Calgary. Over the years Coffee Brew would grow to become one of Calgary's largest coffee distributors. It was Dan's focus on service that allowed him to achieve such growth and success over the years. For years Dan had purchased his coffee from a variety of coffee roasters and in 1999 decided it was time to begin roasting his own coffee. Roasting equipment was purchased, a building was leased, staff were hired and this marked the beginning of Kienna Coffee Roasters.
Since 1999 Kienna has been roasting coffee for a variety of private label customers across Canada. It was only in 2012 that they launched the first branded Kienna Coffee product line. This was a line of 100% biodegradable coffee pods. Dan's daughter Leona saw the rapid growth of the single serve market and knew there was an opportunity to capitalize on an environmentally friendly alternative. Since the invention of the KiennaCUP, Kienna has diverted over 10 million coffee pods from landfills and Kienna has become Canada's largest producer of biodegradable coffee pods.
As Kienna continued to experience growth the family decided it no longer made sense to lease a production facility. In 2015 land was purchased and construction began. Once completed the facility would be become Calgary's largest coffee roastery.

Dan Leach - Founder
Dan was born and raised in Saskatchewan and begin his career as an entrepreneur at the young age of 21. Dan first started in the coffee business with an office coffee distribution company. He would go on to sell this business after many years of significant growth. This sale funded the launch of Kienna Coffee Roasters. It is Dan's foundation of success that has turned Kienna Coffee into what it is today. If you ask him, he would say he is the janitor, forklift operator or whatever job you find him doing at the time, but with over 40 years of experience in the coffee industry Dan is instrumental to Kienna's success
Leona Leach – President
Leona is Dan's daughter and is the current president of The Kienna Family. Leona graduated from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Commerce in 1991 and since 1999 has been a key factor for Kienna's success. Leona invented the KiennaCUP adapter. She has created Canada’s most successful line of coffee pods and allowed Kienna to hold the position as Canada’s Largest Coffee Pod producer.
While Leona enjoys rock climbing, skiing, kayaking and fishing, she most enjoys interacting with customers and making sure things are run efficiently. She follows her father’s work ethic and is willing to take on whatever job needs to be done. Leona provides the focus that allows Kienna to continue to grow year over year.
Randy Leach – Roast Masters
As a member of the Leach family, Randy literally grew up in the coffee business. In 1981, Randy started working for his father fixing coffee brewers. This lead to many years working in the coffee industry in a multitude of roles, giving Randy a great appreciation for the industry as a whole. A true artist at heart Randy enjoys the challenge of bringing science and art together to create “The Perfect Cup”. Randy may not admit it but he is an instrumental part of the Kienna team. Without his passion and dedication to quality coffee, the company would not be where it is today.
Rob Lehnert – Retail Strategy
Rob is the most recent member to join the Kienna team and is also the youngest employee. Like Dan, Rob started out in the coffee business at the age of 21 when he founded Cafe Xaragua, a company that import specialty coffee from the country of Haiti. He has grown the brand across the country and has solidified their position as one of North America's largest distributors of Haitian coffee.
While working in the coffee industry Rob developed a relationship with Kienna Coffee Roasters and joined the team on a one year contract in an effort to help grow Kienna's retail line of products. Since then Rob has been working on Kienna’s overall retail strategy while filling in wherever needed. Rob has spent many hours behind Kienna’s small batch roaster and combined with his experiences in Haiti, he has developed a strong understanding of how coffee makes its ways from the ground to your cup.
